Trailer Towing Training
We provide B+E Trailer Training around the Ipswich area to people travelling from Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. The B+E entitlement allows you to drive a vehicle upto 3,500kg (cars to most ‘Transit’ sized vans) towing a trailer upto 3,500kg (any trailer over 750kg, most caravans and horseboxes). Training runs from our Stowmarket site and you are required to bring BOTH parts of your driving licence to all training sessions.

Whether you already have the B+E entitlement or have passed your car driving test after the 1/1/97, we can offer virtually any combination of hours to form your Trailer Training Course, either using our vehicle and trailer, your vehicle with our trailer or your vehicle with your trailer.
Already have the B+E Entitlement?
If you already have the B+E entitlement on your licence, have a little experience of towing and would like some training then we would recommend a half day (4 hours) course. This will cover the basics of towing, legalities and manoeuvring. If you are completely new to towing then we would recommend at least a 1 day (6 hours) course.
Need to get the B+E Entitlement?
If you do not have the B+E entitlement on your licence then we would recommend that you have a 4 hour assessment lesson – a cost of £160 (£120 in your vehicle*). This will give an indication of how many hours you will require.
Any additional hours training will be charged at £40 per hour (£30 per hour in your vehicle*) and can be in 1/2 day (4 hours) or full day (6 hours) sessions.
Once you have been advised on how many hours training you will need, we can go ahead and book a test, the DSA’s charge for this is currently £115 (£141 ‘Out of Hours’). The test lasts approximately 1.5 hours this plus any hours before the test will be charged at £40 per hour (£30 per hour in your vehicle*). Waiting time for tests are approximately 3-4 weeks, earlier tests from cancellations are often available.
The test consists of several parts:
- Eye Sight Test – Read a new style number plate from 20m
- ‘Show Me Tell Me B+E‘ – You will be asked 5 questions from the list
- Reverse Exercise – Off Road
- General Road Driving – On Road
- Independent Drive - On Road
- Trailer Un-couple and Re-couple Exercise – Off Road

*Please Note:
Below is a list of requirements that MUST be adhered to if training is to be undertaken in your own vehicle.
- Towing mirrors are required by both our instructor and the examiner. You MUST bring to all sessions.
- The vehicle MUST be fitted with either an audible or visual warning to advise when trailer indicators are illuminating (these will be present on most vehicles fitted with a tow bar).
- Your vehicle MUST be roadworthy and the windscreen FREE of chips/cracks.
- We ask that you bring your own L plates for the front of your vehicle – a L plate MUST be displayed.
- You are required to bring your own number plate. This is to be of the ‘square’ style measuring 11″ x 8″ and conforming to regulation, as pictured in the example below. Training will NOT commence without a legal number plate.
- Your vehicle MUST display a ‘No Smoking’ sign.
- If you are using a ‘works’ vehicle, all tools etc MUST be removed for test.
- Pets MUST NOT be brought along during training or test times.
