PDI / ADI Training

(Potential / Approved Driving Instructor)

If you are thinking of becoming a driving instructor we can guide you through the whole process – from filling in your ADI Application Form through to Continued Professional Development.

The Process

Your first step to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor is to send off for your ADI Starter Pack (ADI14), if you haven’t already done so.  You will need to complete the forms and obtain your CRB disclosure number in order to book any of the 3 tests.

Once accepted you will need to prepare for the examinations.

Part 1 - Theory and Hazard Perception Test

This test consists of a multiple choice section and a video based hazard perception section.  You must obtain a score of 85/100 on the multiple choice and a score of 57/75 on the the hazard perception.  There is no limit on the number of times that this test can be taken.

We would recommend self/distance study.  Upon enrolment with us, we will advise you as to the study materials that you will need to buy.  We will offer support by phone, email and in person from your appointed trainer.

Part 2 - Practical Driving Test

This test consists of a an eye sight test followed by a practical test of driving technique.  You must receive no more than 6 minor faults proving that you have a thorough understanding of good safe driving techniques and that you also have the ability to demonstrate them.  You only have 3 attempts to pass this test.

You must undertake a sufficient number of hours training in order to bring you to the standard required to pass your practical driving test.

Part 3 - Test of Instructional Ability

This test is of your instructional ability and measures your ability to give effective instruction.  The objective of the test is to assess the quality of your instruction and your ability to pass your knowledge on to pupils.  The test is in 2 parts, each of which lasts approximately half an hour.  You must pass both parts on the same test.  You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge and ability by giving practical driving instruction to the examiner who will take the role of a pupil.  You only have 3 attempts to pass this test.

Before you can take your Part 3 test you must undertake a compulsory 40 hours tutition, which can only be signed off by your assigned trainer.

Trainee Licence

If you wish to gain more realistic experience by actually instructing pupils then you are able to apply for a Trainee Licence (Pink Badge) once you have passed your Part 2 and have had the 40 hours Part 3 training.

The pink badge is valid for 6 months but does require you to do one of two things:

  • to have 20% of your lessons supervised by your assigned trainer

or

  • take an additional 20 hours Part 3 training

either of which must be done within 3 months of the badge issue date or your first Part 3 test – whichever is sooner.

Summary

You can study at your own pace so that training can fit in with your current lifestyle.  It normally takes from 6 to 18 months to complete the process.  You must pass both your Parts 2 and 3 tests within 2 years of passing your Part 1 test.  If you undertake your training with us and whether you take the intermediary step of being a PDI or go straight to being an ADI we are happy to offer you a franchise with us.
